DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:

Location: Centurion, Gauteng
Duration: 6 months

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is offering a Disaster Management Internship opportunity. During this programme, the candidate will work closely with the IFRC South Africa Senior DM officer and provide support in many tasks and duties relating to Disaster Management.
 

Key performance areas of the programme:

  • Providing National Societies support with disaster risk management activities
  • Ensuring that the disaster risk management activities are completed effectively, efficiently, and on time
  • Aiding in building national disaster response and preparedness capacities
  • Using the various capacities to improve your disaster management programming
  • Acting as an advocate for IFRC's Preparedness for Effective Response approach
  • Providing support to the Disaster Management team by increasing preparedness for effective response (this is done through PER/ Red Ready approach)
  • Building response capacities before disasters and working with National Societies to achieve this
  • Participating in programme profiling by engaging in meetings and monthly newsletters
  • Supporting the integration of the resilience approach across all NS programming areas
  • Ensuring that knowledge sharing and best practices are promoted amount Red Cross Movement Partners
  • Ensuring that the IFRC support to the NS is planned, implemented, and reported on
  • Monitoring emergency operations efficiently whilst serving as a link with the PMER officer (Pretoria)
  • Working with the NS team to ensure financial and narrative reports are prepared in line
    with the requirements specified in the project agreement/ standard Federation reporting guidelines
  • Ensuring any other tasks set out by your Supervisor is completed

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:

  • Must have completed an Advanced University Degree in Project Management, Development/ Social Studies, Disaster Management or any other field
  • Must have professional educational training in disaster risk management
  • Must have relevant work experience in the disaster risk management field
  • Preferred: work experience within a humanitarian organisation
  • Must be proficient in MS Office
  • Must be fluent in English (written and oral)
  • Preferred: excellent command of another IFRC official language, e.g. French/ Spanish/ Arabic
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must have strong and developed technical skills in disaster risk management international practices
  • Must have excellent project management skills
  • Must have excellent reporting skills
  • Must be professional and accountable
  • Must have excellent decision-making capabilities
