ABOUT THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE APPRENTICESHIP:

Robben Island Museum (RIM), established by the Department of Arts and Culture in 1997, is a public entity responsible for the management, maintenance, presentation, development and marketing of Robben Island as a national estate and World Heritage Site.

RIM is also responsible for managing and maintaining the Islands assets, including the Medium and Maximum Security Prison Complexes, Robert Sobukwe’s House, Curio shops, Village Shops, the Village Precinct and related recreational facilities, as well as the Helipad and runway on the Island, World War 2 memorials, power generation and water processing plants, Jetty 1 and the Nelson Mandela Gateway the Mayibuye Archives, the 3 ferries that transport people to the Island and buses used by tourists on the Island.

Guided tours take place every day, Monday to Sunday, of the island's prison including lime quarry where prisoners labored & Mandela's cell. The Robben Island experience starts at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town at 4 allocated times each day.
 

DETAILS ABOUT THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME:

Locations: Robben Island Museum, Cape Town, Western Cape
Positions available: 4
Stipend: R70 715 per year
Contract term: between 24 and 36 months (subject to training and successful assessments outcome)

Robben Island Museum are seeking 4 apprentice’s to train at the Ferry Operations Department, with the purpose of providing on board training to South African Cadets who intend on pursuing a Port Operations career path. The programme will allow cadets to gain knowledge and sea-time as required by SAMSA, in order to qualify for Skipper and Master Port operations.
 

Duties and Responsibilities of the role:

  • Attend all training required
  • Complete the training record books within the specified time frame
  • Use all opportunities given to gain knowledge and experience, with regards to operation and maintenance of equipment on board the vessels and ship board routine
  • Obtain the Skipper Port Ops and/or Master Port Operations Unlimited qualification within the specified time frame
  • Partake in bridge watch-keeping, report objects and targets to the Master
  • Completion of a steering certificate
  • Ensuring that all LSA and FFE is in position and always available for use
  • Ensuring safe mooring and unmooring operations
  • Ensuring that cargo is safely loaded, stowed and lashed for sea
  • Ensuring that the vessel is ready for sea and reporting to the Able seamen
  • Performing lookout duties at night and during restricted visibility
  • Ensuring cleanliness of the vessel at all times (inside and outside)
  • Performing all deck maintenance (including washing down, chipping and painting)
  • Performing regular safety rounds and reporting any defects to the Master or Skipper
  • Taking part in drills and training performed on board
  • Thoroughly understand the use of rope work and lifting gear, including splicing
  • Thoroughly understand the operation of all LSA, FFE and deck equipment on board the vessel
  • Ensuring that the gangway is properly secured and there is safe access for passengers
  • Showing passengers to their correct seating in the accommodation areas
  • Taking count of all passengers boarding and ensuring that the vessel is never overloaded
  • Ensuring that passengers remain comfortable during sea passage and attending to any sick passengers
  • Stay in the engine room for 10 days, per the on board training record book, to become familiar with everything

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Education requirement: must have completed Matric (NSC)
  • Education requirement: must have completed a Maritime Studies National Diploma: S1,S2,S3 & S4
  • Preference will be given to unemployed applicants
  • Must have passed a SAMSA eye test

  • Must be in good health
