ABOUT THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE INTERNSHIP:

As one of the top scientific and technology research organisation, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) aims to develop, research, diffuse technology and localise with the aim of enhancing socio-economic development in South Africa.
 

DETAILS ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME:

Locations: Johannesburg, Gauteng
Duration: 18 months

CSIR is offering 8 internship opportunities in collaboration with the Mandela Mining Precinct. The successful candidates will provide research and administrative support as well as provide assistance with research, implementation and project delivery tasks in accordance with Mandela Mining. The candidates will be placed in the information technology, geoscience, mining and social sciences areas.
 

The internship opportunities are as follows:
1) Programme: Mining Engineering Internships
Number of positions available: 4
Key performance areas of the programme:

  • Reviewing the literature of previous research that was done internationally and locally in the above-mentioned areas
  • Using various mine sites and mining engineering technologies to undertake motion and time studies
  • Corresponding with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) regarding technologies related to the above areas at different mine sites
  • Ensuring results and processes are reported
  • When required, present and attend to results
  • When required, perform basic admin tasks

2) Programme: Social Sciences for Mining Internships
Number of positions available: 1
Key performance areas of the programme:

  • In accordance with the programme, performing literature reviews on the impact of People and Technology for underground mining contexts and environments that are both international and local
  • Gathering data and partaking in motion and time studies on local communities and various mine sites, with the aim to gain a broader understanding of its impact on people in the sector
  • Corresponding with stakeholders and researchers who are involved in modernisation projects.
  • When instructed by the programme manager/project leads, conducting research tasks or work that relates to technologies and people
  • Writing reports about results and processes
  • When required, presenting research/results
  • When instructed by the project leads/programme managers, performing basic admin tasks
  • Ensuring an (HCD) plan is maintained and developed

3) Programme: ICT Internships
Number of positions available: 1
Key performance areas of the programme:

  • Reviewing the literature of previous research done internationally and locally on Real-Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) for the purpose of underground mining environments pertaining to the programme
  • Partaking in motion and time studies on certain RTIMS technologies and techniques specific mine sites
  • Corresponding with manufacturers and suppliers of RTIMS technologies pertaining to the above at different mine sites
  • Ensuring results and processes are reported
  • When requested to do so, presenting and attending results
  • When requested to do so by project leaders, perform various admin duties

4) Programme: Geology and Geophysics Internships
Number of positions available: 2
Key performance areas of the programme:

  • Reviewing the literature of previous research that was done both internationally and locally on applications pertaining to geology and geophysics aligned to the programme
  • Partake in motion and time studies on recognised geophysics technologies and techniques at different mine sites
  • Correspond with manufacturers and suppliers of geophysics and geological technologies pertaining to the above areas at different mine sites
  • Reporting on results and processes
  • When required, present and attend to results
  • When required by the project leaders, perform basic admin tasks

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS NEEDED TO APPLY:

Before applying, please ensure that you meet ALL of the following minimum entry criteria – failure to satisfy all the requirements will result in your application being disqualified:

General requirements for all programmes:

  • Must have a valid drivers licence
  • Must have excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Must have excellent numerical skills

1) Mining Engineering Internships

  • Must have completed a Bachelors Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Advantageous: post-graduate qualification
  • Must have experience in metalliferous and merchandised mining environment (advantageous)
  • Must have excellent health to perform underground duties

2) Social Sciences for Mining Internships

  • Must have completed an Honours Degree in Social Sciences
  • Advantageous: Masters Degree
  • Must have Intra/Inter dependencies and between technology, people and systems
  • Must have high attention to detail
  • Must be able to communicate well
  • Must have administrative skills such as filing and minute taking (advantageous)
  • Must NOT have a criminal record

3) ICT Internships

  • Must have completed a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science
  • Advantageous: post-graduate qualification
  • Must have high attention to detail

4) Geology and Geophysics Internships

  • Must have completed a BSc Honours Degree in Geophysics/ Geology
  • Advantageous: post-graduate qualifications
  • Must have experience in metalliferous and merchandised mining environment (advantageous)
  • Must have excellent health
  • Must have high attention to detail
